Continuing the normal voice thing. I’m gonna have to come up with a new name…maybe Sam Sleeves. He could be Sherwin’s very young nephew… 🙂
Anyway, I wrote this song for an American Idol songwriting contest a little while back. I thought it might fun to try to write a pop song, to see if I intersected anywhere with the world of Big Contemporary Pop!
And I don’t think I do…but Regie Hamm won with his song, Time of my Life.
The Poor Man’s Lullaby is my mother’s favorite song of mine. She mentions it a lot and doesn’t understand why I can’t get a big record deal out of it. And she also doesn’t understand why I sing so many songs with dirt in my throat.
Lois doesn’t like the chorus and I’ve tried to fix it. She has really good instincts and helps me with stories and music a lot. If she says something isn’t right, then I usually trust her. But songs are like cement and they set quickly.
But here it is, The Poor Man’s Lullaby:

Lyrics:
I walk the railway station at the end of the day
I watch the moon from the train but we can’t pull away
It follows close behind, like it slipped its lunar line
Don’t lock the cabin when I’m sleeping I get lost in my dreams
I hear the ticket man, the passengers, the engineer
Sing a poor man’s lullaby, out of tune and out of time
Did anybody lose me? Did anybody take me home? Did anybody lose me?
Cause here I am wondering…
I take my luggage from the porter and then make for the street
I hear the echo of the automatic sound of my feet
Trailing close behind, like I’m trampling over time
From the sun to the moon and from the earth to me
A distant tension like a silence how it makes me weep and
Sing a poor man’s lullaby, out of tune and out of time
Did anybody lose me? Did anybody take me home? Did anybody lose me?
Cause here I am wondering…
I like it because it is really sounds like Sleeve, feel like Sleeve 😀 don’t know if I expressed it right.
Yes very Stipe-ish, sweet & evocative
Smash!
Nice song, I could swear Michael Stipe was singing the chorus! It’s great that you have an arsenal of voices to choose from, but I definitely like dirt voice best.
Lovely song, Sleeves. What does mom say about the accent?
