When I first heard about these flashfire filmmaking projects where small groups of knuckleheads get together and avalanche a short film in just two days I thought:\u00a0 no no no.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I pushed back in\u00a0my crickitty old rocking chair and let the cobwebs settle back down on me.\u00a0 I puffed my pipe and wondered why the fussy rush oh youngsters?<\/p>\n

But then I started to notice the dipsy doo of my own time and saw how this was a way to do a little\u00a0 \u201cdream squeezing\u201d.\u00a0 And then Bill Rogers of Coruway Films <\/a> asked me to collaborate and who can say no to Bill Rogers?\u00a0 I say no one.\u00a0 I say no one.\u00a0 I say it 3 times out loud into my hands.<\/p>\n[audio:http:\/\/www.atomsmotion.com\/uploads\/waitertheme.mp3]\n

So on Friday, June 12, Bill and I sat with a leaden chocolate glazed donut at Double D Comics in Manchester and we jumped through the burning ring of fire.\u00a0 To prevent any pre-making, the 48HFP provides some cinematic whiplashers.\u00a0 Each team first went up to pick their \u201cgenre\u201d from a hat.\u00a0 These included drama, comedy, mockumentary, musical, fantasy\u2026and for us:\u00a0 Buddy Film.<\/p>\n

The other limits:\u00a0 a line of dialogue (Don\u2019t just stand there, move it!), a prop (sunglasses) and a New Hampshire Landmark (we shot in Portsmouth and our film is bedribbled with landmarks).<\/p>\n

And then it all spun out like some combination of crazy glue and silly string.\u00a0 Like jumpstarting some old jeep in the desert using a flint and magnifying glass\u2026like sinking the ship and swimming for a distant island carrying a box of bells\u2026like putting on your freshest pair of jelly jeans.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t know what we were doing and that was the plan and it never really stopped being the plan.\u00a0 [audio:http:\/\/www.atomsmotion.com\/uploads\/waitertheme2.mp3]<\/p>\n

We improvised everything and could only see as far our next scene and even then we didn\u2019t know where we were or what we had.\u00a0 We only sort of knew that it \u201cseemed\u201d like we were heading somewhere and \u201cseemed\u201d like we\u2019d established something.<\/p>\n

We began with the idea of Sherwin being an old guy walking around telling stories into an old fashioned cassette recorder.\u00a0 And it went on from there to become\u2026.\u201dThe Waiter\u201d starring\u00a0 Rick Ganley (his first acting gig \u2013 and what a natural old natural he is!) and the beautiful and talented Doria Bramante.<\/p>\n

We were assisted and charmed by the warm and winning ways of Jay Childs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was an amazing and hard experience.\u00a0 Like hiking an enormously steep, but somehow flat mountain.\u00a0 I loved it.\u00a0 I loved how well we all worked together.\u00a0 It was a perfect collaboration.\u00a0 Ideas getting thrown out, played with.\u00a0 Freedom.\u00a0 Really nice.\u00a0 Bill directed, edited, harnessed. I did a couple songs.<\/p>\n
