WONDERLAND SONG: The musical starts on the Star Trek-like bridge of the USS Lancelot – and our first song is performed by Captain Space and his crew as they welcome aboard Omalya Harris who will accompany them on their journey to Planet Eden. But this musical is being written by 17 year old Max Spencer – and at the very end of the song, Captain Space and Crew vanish, lights change – and we suddenly transition to Max’s bedroom – a boy’s makeshift version of the bridge on the Star Trek Enterprise. He’s sitting at his piano keyboard and singing the song – his voice singing alone at the end. Captain Space is his projected older alter ego. Handsome, overly confident.

LIGHTNING IN THE CAVE SONG: So this is a love story about two sick teenagers. Max – who is suffering from a degenerative disease – and has lost one eye and uses crutches to get around – and Om, who’s epilepsy is so severe that she’s going to have a small part of her brain removed in the hopes of putting an end to her seizures. Om describes these daily seizures as “Lightning in a cave” and she’s worried that this brain surgery will fundamentally change her. Though Max and Om are neighbors, they really haven’t met. But Max has been watching her from his window – and has an enormous crush on her. While Om is always outdoors and taking photos of all she sees, Max spends almost all his time in his room. But on this day before her big surgery, Max has ventured outside to wish her good luck. As Om sits on a bench in her yard and looks through photos on her camera, Max crutches out behind her and sings this sort of worried love song to her.

MIGHTY HORSE SONG: Mighty Horse is the Captain of the Shadow Pirates – but he’s new. He’s just taking command of the Interrobang ship. Here the crew nervously await his arrival and tell each other what they’ve heard of the feared Mighty Horse. This is Mighty Horse’s BIG DRAMATIC ENTRANCE. So he APPEARS midway through the song in Smoke or Fog – or “beams” aboard the ship with a magical shimmery wow.

THE CHRISTMAS LA LA SONG: Sung at the end by Captain Space/Max, our lead. Joined in by ALL as I’m thinking this might be the final song of the show. While it is a “Christmas” song there’s no use of the word “Christmas” and to me is more reflective of the magical mood of a sacred evening.
