“Edible Minute – Chickens”

NHPR is running a whole slew of food-related pieces.

They asked me to do some ultra-short (one minute) pieces on a variety of topics – chickens, raw milk, gleaners, etc.

The Tweets – story for NHPR

It’s interesting and strange that we don’t have a term or name or easy way to talk about the outgoing decade. The aughts, the nils, the oh’s, the zeds were all proposed, but nothing took.

For this piece for NHPR I sort of rolled this odd problem around, trying to get to the bottom of why we stumbled in a place where we usually excel.

“The Christmas Skater” CD for Sale

“The Christmas Skater” will be airing on XM/Sirius on Sunday, December 13th at 9 pm. It recounts Sherwin’s yearly tradition of skating down the Lemon River and the little adventure from his past that has made the tradition so profound.

Who is Sherwin Sleeves?

My name is Sean Hurley and I am Sherwin Sleeves ombudsman, gopher, handyman, internet person, musical assistant, and all around amanuensis. Sherwin lives just up the road from me in the next town over and I visit him once or twice a week to pick up songs or stories or whatever he has to give me. He's an older man of about 79. He lives in a small cabin on top of Marked Mountain, in Lemon, New Hampshire. I believe he spent much of his time working for a traveling theater. He is not married and apparently has no other family. A frequent question: Does he really do all that walking? Yes! He does do a lot of walking. Even with the cane and a slightly bad leg, he walks more than anyone I know and he doesn’t seem to bother with any difference between night or day. He’ll set off at midnight for a 10 mile journey to nowhere. From what I’ve learned, he doesn’t seem to have the least idea where he’s heading to when he goes out – he just puts on his hat and walks out the door and is suddenly gone.
